Reviews
Same review for the matching headboard.
I bought this headboard with the captains bed for myself. It was a choice I made based on the size of my bedroom. I found the directions were ok. The print was a little small and there werent any written directions, just pictures. I did find there was one error with one of the end pieces to the bed itself and had to pull out some of the pins and reverse their order from the directions. (When pulling out the aluminum pins, be careful, you can accidentally pull the particle board apart. I used a pair of needle/nosed pliers and wiggled them gently out.) I didnt like being without my box spring and with the box spring in there the shelves in the headboard were too low. So I jacked up the headboard by 7 inches and have blocks of wood under it for support. I took one of the knobs to my local paint store and they were able to match the paint color so I was able to paint the block (the one that shows) and I am also going to paint the edge of the particle board along the top of the headboard. Overall, it took me about 8 hours to do everything. I did 90 of this myself with only a little help adjusting its position after I got it put together. My biggest suggestion would be that if you end up doing this by yourself, to make sure you are putting it together where it will used. Its a bit on the heavy side with the headboard attached. Effective.
Its blue!
Much like xeeshticka who wrote the review i based my purchase off, I am an under 20 college student who was looking for something cute. My tiny nyc city apartment cant handle too much furniture so i thought having a blue bed would sort of make up for the otherwise lack of furniture. My fedex man is a sweetheart so he delivered the extremely heavy box into my kitchen. i started building it, all by myself, in the evening around 7 and was done by 10:00. The bed does have some pretty sharp corners so I dont know how well this would do for an extremely young childanyway, the actual building wasnt tough. the predrilled holes matched up for the most part. after i was done setting the bed up, i put the box spring on it. there is approximately a 2 inch gap between the box spring and the bed frame. the box spring is unnecessary for this frame. drawers slide in and out with ease. you get what you paid for! Easy as it says.
My son LOVES this bed!!!
My son has had this bed for over a year now. He is 6.5 now and got the bed shortly before his 5th birthday. My hubs assembled it by himself in about 4 hours (with distractions) with simple every day tools. I was really impressed with how easily the drawers were to slide in and out, and how sturdy they were!!! My son jumps on this bed (what little boy doesnt like to do that), and isnt always so careful about sliding the drawers in carefully, but it hasnt taken any damage!!! He is a rough and tumble little boy and I am so happy that this bed has stood the test of time and tumbling this bed takes!!! We loved it so much that we now have the captains bed, and the matching headboard and bedside table to match. I love the blue which is a nice washnot a paint of color on the wood. It is pressed partical board, but seriously looks like real wood and is sturdy like real wood unless you look inside the drawers!!! We use just a mattress on this bed, because the lip where the mattress goes isnt really tall enough to keep a box springs and mattress on. I could see with a child especially the top mattress would constantly be pushed off the bed. The boards under the mattress are pretty strong and I have no worries of my son bouncing on the bed some or myself or hubs sitting on it! I think if a larger person were to want to use the bed, I would add an inexpensive buddy board to it. But with our 6 year old it isnt necessary. Love this!
Great (blue) tween bed.
Paired with a foam mattress this will make a perfect bed for tweens or guests. The three drawers at the bottom lets one use up lost space as a built in dresser. Assembly requires a masters degree of Walmart Furniture Assembly, as once you assemble enough of these types of manufactured furniture the instructions become irrelevant. First timers should stock up on spirits and prep the coffee pot for a long weekend. Just Buy It.
Not sure what all the complaining is about. The bed is fine.
Im going to defend this bed. All right. Im about to go into depth about my entire experience with this bed so that people can get a fairly honest picture of what this bed is like because based on the reviews, I was skeptical of getting something good for the amount of money I was paying for. If youre expecting a bed fit for the gods, then I might suggest shopping for furniture in person rather than online. This isnt to imply that the bed isnt good quality//its actually pretty nice, but more on that later. Within three days of my order, I received it in the mail. I was a little worried about the rumors of it being the weight of a thousand elephants because I knew this was going to be a solo project. Not being the strongest of twenty/year/old girls, I was a little intimidated by own expectations. Now, I live on the first floor of my apartment, but there are about five stairs before getting to my door, which whoever delivered my bed still managed to bypass and settle the long package in front of my door (that was nice of him/her). The package was taller than I was (seven/eight feet maybe?) and skinny, but yes, it was heavy, but not holding/the/world/inside/of/it heavy. With a little maneuvering and some geometric guessing, I pushed the package inside my apartment. It would have been easier with a friend, probably, but rest assured, you can do it by yourself if need be. It certainly felt like 108 pounds of wood, but not much more. Packaging was done well, I have to say. I had to dissect the box open in order to get the pieces out, so keep scissors handy. Not a piece was damaged. There will be three long, recycled/wood pieces inside and they might be broken, but worry not, consumers! They are not part of your bed. Theyre for cushioning. You can promptly keep recycling those recycled/wood pieces and spreading the recycled joy as you begin the journey of building your bed. You will need a tool kit. Dont expect this bed to provide you little screwdrivers or hammers because they wont. Youre an independent person. You should have a tool kit. Its essential in life. With that said, if you DONT have a tool kit, you might want to purchase one (involving some good screwdrivers and a decent hammer, at least) while you purchase your bed. This is not a screw with your fingers and hammer with a hardcover book project. Now, as for the comments of the bed having more parts than furniture, thats a little silly. You have to build three drawers and the frame. For wooden pieces, you have nine for the main frame (headboard, footboard, long board for the right side of the frame, two skinny boards from the left for the drawers, two inside the frame to secure the two boards that will hold your mattress) and five wooden pieces per drawer (basically, to make the square frame and bottom of the drawer). There are a good amount of screws of all sizes, which the instructions give you a number of. Heads up: Not all the same types of screws will be in one neat little package. Youll have four screws of one type in four different bags. So, dont worry about missing parts; theyre probably in another bag. This means you might want to organize your pieces before building anything to save time. They provide you this little rectangular thing to help with the hammering, which works really nicely. I saved the piece for later projects. Considering I did this aaaaall by myself and I was distracted numerous times, it took me five hours. So, if you have a friend or two, the time will cut in half (two/two and a half hours, in theory). The instructions were simple though. Perhaps one diagram had me puzzled, but once I held the pieces in question in front of me, I realized what the diagram was referring to. Its pretty simple. The drawers arent THAT flimsy, if flimsy at all. If you nail everything properly and tightly, theyre fine. As for weight, I keep 23 books in the middle drawers, 15 in the right one, and my laptop and electronics in the left. So, a good amount of weight in each. Clothes, in that sense, should be much lighter than 23 books. If youre storing bricks in the drawers, thats your business and everything, but perhaps a little odd for drawers. I just use a mattress on the bed frame, no box spring. My sleep has been aming thus far, but people are different, so if you would like a box spring, it should be able to handle it. I just dont prefer having one is all, except for one thing: The box spring might add to the secureness of the bed. See, sometimes the bed sinks a little (just a little) when I sit in the middle of the bed, so Ive put some stuff under the panels holding the mattress for support. Its not enough to make me think, Oh no! The bed is gonna break! But it is enough that I would like a little more support. If you have a box spring as opposed to just a mattress, this problem should immediately go away. If you add some support to the middle of the bed, then this also avoids sinking doom, which is what I have done, and I am sleeping amingly. For any worries if your mattress wont fit (as I had because this bed kept referring to children and, I dont know, when I think of children, I think of tiny beds), youll be fine. It fits a regular twin size bed, with a little extra room (about an inch all around, perhaps?), which works GREAT for me because I leave my phone and glasses in that little space as I sleep. It looks great. The blue adds pizz to my room, which is barren because I just moved in and everything. So, I would recommend the bed. It does everything I need it to do. Its not a bed I think Ill have forever, but for the time being as a college student in her first apartment wanting something to make her feel a little more at home, this bed frame is a lovely one. Hope my incredibly detailed review gives you more insight on what your future purchase might be like. Nice fit.
good for price
This is a decent bed for children, I dont see it lasting 10 years but overall I am happy with my purchase. My biggest problem with the bed is that the drawers do not pull out smoothly and the bottom of the drawers is a little flimsy. The color is great and its low enough for my 22 month old to climb in and out of. If I could only get him to sleep in it is the problem know! Get it!!
A Deal for the Price
For under 140 I ordered this bed off and it arrived less than a week later. The UPS delivery left the box on my front porch and I had to unpack it there and bring it in pieces because it was so heavy. It took a couple of hours to put it together. It really wasnt too bad to put together. There were more directions than you would have gotten on pieces. The drawers are flimsy but I used glue to help put them together and glued in the drawer panel. I dont believe the drawers can be used for anything other than underwear and socks. The drawers only take about 1/2 of the space in the base, so there is some space behind the drawers to store stuff that dont need to be accessed regularly. The bed is cute and I do like it. We really needed something small for a small room. We only bought the platform portion to keep it compact and it really works. I found a similar bed at for about 50 more and beds on Craigslist were still over 100 for used beds. This is not a piece your kid will be handing down to the next generation but it should get through a few years without any problem. Very sturdy.
Nice bed
I really like this bed. Perfect fit for my 3 year old. I love the color and the bed it pretty heavy which is perfect because I dont want him to be able to push the bed across the floor. One of the knobs kept coming off but nothing a little glue cant fix. Cool!!
Nice, sturdy bed that our son loves!
This is a nice, sturdy bed we bought for our 3 1/2 year old as an upgrade from his toddler bed. It matches a small dresser we had bought for him a couple years ago from one of the big name furniture companies (which cost more than this bed did). If we had bought the matching bed, it would have cost us almost three times what this bed did. Based on some of the other reviews, I had prepared myself for a three hour assembly. But my son and I managed to put it together in less than an hour and a half, which includes the extra time required for him to help me with his little plastic tools. I think the trick was that we took about 15 minutes before we got started to lay out all the parts in a logical manner in the hall outside my sons room. The bed was easy enough to move into place on the hardwood floors in my sons room. I could see how it might be difficult on a thick carpet, as the bed is quite hefty. The bed is sturdy and looks good but the drawers are of questionable durability. They are good for holding sheets and blankets and a few toys, but if we plan on putting more than that inside the drawers, I plan to add reinforcing slats to the bottoms, an easy enough fix. Overall, were extremely pleased with the bed and our son is extremely proud of his big boy bed! Still love it.
Good but some little problems
Somewhat easy to put together (with 2 people) but a year later and Im having minor issues. The bed posts have these decorative balls. One of them started coming loose and we couldnt figure out how to put it back in. The screw refuses to go into the hole properly and the decoration stays loose. Overall nice bed and doesnt squeak. Pretty sturdy too. It was perfect!
