It is sturdy. Looks like the picture. The mechanisms on the futon work smoothly. The ladder is a bit awkward but thats to be expected on a straight up and down ladder. 200 lb limit on top and 600 on futon. We have a regular ceiling height and the top bunk is a bit high leaving much clearance for the futon. My eight year old grandson who is 55 tall can sit up on the upper bunk with 3 head clearance. Make sure your ceiling fan will not be over the bed as it will hit whomever is in the top bunk. With two people building, this took about five hours to put together. Suggest you take inventory of all materials to ensure you receive everything, make sure everything is labeled properly, read instructions twice a few steps ahead of where you are, look at the drawings as you progress, and tighten all the screws no sooner than when you are ready to attach the futon. Tight fit. Great choice for reasonable price
