A friend got me this as a gift for my lil girls 5th bday. The original shipment did NOT contain the bolts/instructions, BUT one call to , and they picked it up, and resent a new one that arrived within a week. Kudos to for awesome customer service.
On to my actual review
assembly LOL make sure you have the room cleared of any other large furniture first. you WILL need some decent space for assembly. A few parts were a little trickier, and my reccomendation is dont tighten the top screws all the way tight till all the parts are in place. Then when your finished go over them ( in between the bed and futon attachment sections.
Me personally, I dont have a futon mattress yet, so what I did was put together the bedframe and add one ladder ( as it is in the corner of a room, and adding the other ladder would have been useless, BUT nine the less the fact that is that versitile is a plus) I didnt want to put together the futon section, and have my little one get hurt, or bend/break the frame before I get a futon mattress to go to it. The frame is quite sound and works just as well without it.
The instructions arent confusing and use exploding diagram style instructions, the parts are well labelled, and the little allen wrench worked well.
I have high ceilings, so I dont have to worry about ceiling clearance, but I would say at LEAST 8ft+ ceilings would work best with this. I had few to no real problems with assembly, took about 3 hours just for the frame without adding the futon, but I am meticulous, and part of it was playing furniture tetris upon realizing the size of the frame.
Now, completed, it DOES have a little wobbleness to it (it IS a rather lightweight frame) [after ALL bolts are properly tightened] when I take a step or two up the ladder, but again, I havent added the futon frame underneath that would help counterweight. Im also about a 150lb, 59 adult, For a small child, its 100 fine for a bunk bed.
Temporarily I have a twin sized air mattress in the top with a mattress cover, and the frame, assembled well, has no sharp edges or pinching , and it has worked out fine for my 5 year old girl who loves it. All in all, I would most definitely recommend this product to people who have a 5+ child, as it can grow with your child as well ( when they get to the early/teen years, the futon can become a bed, and the upstairs would make excellent extra storage space)
I dont really have any downsides to tell sofar of this product, except that it is a little bigger than it looks, so make sure you have room to move around as you build it. Very sturdy It is just excellent!!
great for kids!
