What a nice bed! I thought Id write a review while the assembly process is fresh in my mind. I purchased directly from the company but they have no place for reviews, so Ill leave it here.
Ive put together countless furniture, and this is much more straightforward, not to mention the nice feeling of solid wood. The individual pieces are light enough to handle easily, but at the same time they are solid. The video shows that you could use a drill to put it all together, but honestly a hand-held screwdriver was more than sufficient for me. The attachment points are perfectly done, and it all goes together in an intuitive way.
Before assembly I took everything outside and stained it. It isnt really necessary to stain the bed slats as they arent visible after the mattress is in place, and these would be the pieces to use for any experimentation with stain colors. Poplar is a soft wood but it looks pretty good with the medium walnut Watco Danish oil I chose for it -- a very forgiving treatment thats quick to apply. A darker stain might appear more uniform, but its nice to see the grain of the wood. I lightly sanded the pieces first, by hand, though for the most part they were nicely finished.
The default version of this bed is high compared to my old one. If I had to purchase this over again, I would have chosen the optional lower legs. Also, this is obvious from the picture, but the mattress lies flat on the platform, with no risers to surround it, so a very deep mattress looks a little funny if you are switching from a bed that had vertical pieces surrounding the mattress. On the plus side, there is generous space below the bed for storage bins. Very happy overall with the purchase; it was a great value for the money. For the price, its great
Solid piece, great value
