It took my husband I several hours to put the bed together. If you follow the directions are good at interpreting drawings, it should turn out ok. The holes were aligned well for the hardware to be installed. Weve been sleeping on it for a couple weeks now dont have any complaints. The bed doesnt move around and there isnt any squeeks or rattles. The drawers arent made to hold much weight. Dont expect to store king size sheet sets or books in the drawers without the bottom of the drawers sagging. I think this bed is a good bargain for the price. We live in a 2-story house and could only get full size mattress box springs up the steps. This bed and a foam mattress allowed us to upgrade to a king size bed.
The wood is not high quality, but for the price I didnt expect it to be. It is very functional and nice to look at. It was easy to put together. I had a problem with the drawers where they sent me twelve left side cuts instead of six left and six right side cuts. However, with an email to the company including the parts that were missing and the order number, they sent them out no problem. This buy was worth it.
Hi.We love this bed.It was very easy to assemble, assembly instructions were so clear to follow. For years we have been using mattress with spring box,and I cant even describe difference of not having it.It is just amazing feeling, very peaceful sleeping, weaking up with no backpain. We highly recommend this bed,we love the extra storage drawers.
The good: Quite attractive; better looking than the photos suggest. Good price for this type of bed. Takes longer to assemble than the instructions state but still reasonably quick, maybe three hours start to finish. Biggest problem we had with assembly was that the threaded inserts holding the frame bolts are somewhat tricky to line up. As with all particleboard, care is needed to avoid stripping screws. Sturdy _with some added hardware_; see below.
The bad: If youre expecting Sauder quality, look elsewhere. (Why Sauder doesnt make beds of this type, I dont know.) Finish peels or scratches with little effort; be careful of dragging pieces on the floor. Frame is OK (but again, see below,) but the drawers look and feel flimsy. Cam locks holding the front pieces are weak; would much rather have had decorative screws. Several screw and cam holes were a bit misaligned, requiring some manipulation and a few hammer-taps to get right. To Prepacs credit, the drawer bottoms look as though they wont pop out easily; a problem with most flat-pack drawers. And, once properly assembled, all drawers went into the frame flush and smoothly.
The ugly: Know that this bed is not as tall as the photos make it appear. The mattress platform is all of 12 off the floor. Were using a 14 mattress with it so the overall height is good, but someone using a standard mattress might find it low. Would probably be perfect for a kids room. Your mileage may vary; just something to keep in mind when purchasing. Oh, also, if you use nightstands, the two drawers nearest the headboard will be all but unusable. Were using them for seasonal clothing so they need be opened only a couple of times per year.
The Key: By far the most common complaint in these reviews is that the finished bed is not particularly sturdy, and theyre right. I wouldnt want to have to move it frequently, and Im sure that there would be much creaking and many misaligned drawers over time. Fortunately, several reviews here, particularly one posted by Heywood J. (yeah, its what you think ) last year describe a solution, which I implemented during assembly. I very carefully squared up the frame with a carpenters square and measurement on the diagonals, then reinforced each corner with a 4 corner brace fastened with 10 5/8 wood screws (use a center punch or awl to get them started), plus braces at each end of the two internal gables. 8 braces and 32 screws total; about $15 at the hardware store. When installing the slats forming the mattress platform, I folded a small square of non-skid foam rubber shelf liner over the end of each slat as it went into the U-shaped metal channel at each end of the bed. I then took a pair of pliers and bent the lower arm of the U channel up just a little between each slat. They now dont move under any persuasion short of a serious hammer blow. Finally, I drilled four holes in the head gable and bolted it to the bookcase headboard from our old bed.
The result: Our modded bed went from somewhat shaky to quite solid. The drawers fit perfectly, and I have yet to hear a creak out of it. We havent done much, uh, dynamic stress testing on it yet, but the early results are promising. Four stars; five for appearance and ease of assembly, minus two for the engineering shortcomings, plus one because it appears those shortcomings can be overcome at reasonable cost/effort.
I have been putting this type of furniture together for over 10 years and I have to say these instructions were by far one of the clearest Ive seen.
The bed arrives in three boxes and prior to starting I made sure all pieces were present. I also seperated the pieces into two piles; stuff for the frame and stuff for the drawers - believe me, this made it a lot easier as I was working.
It took a little under 2 hours to complete and I only ran into one minor problem. While putting together the drawers I had problems sliding the bottom pieces into the groove thats in the drawer - this was easily solved with a little tap from my hammer - but it was frustrating at first because the grooves appeared to not line up correctly. Also the directions give you a time estimate - 122 minutes, thats about how long it took me.
As far as quality goes - it is great. The finish looks good, the drawers slide easily in and out, the planks that act as support for the mattress are sturdy.
I slept on it last night - I have a Tempurpedic foam mattress and I didnt use a box spring - and it was great.Great supoort and it didnt squeak or move around or anything.
All in all, I think it is definitely worth it.
Update: Ive had this bed frame for almost 2 years now. Some of the planks for started to crank along the edges - I am hoping I can just replace them from the hardware store.
Parts are reasonable for the price. They could definitely be higher quality but they are fine especially considering the price. Fairly easy to assemble. Instructions are clear and easy to follow. Give your self plenty of time. While I had power tools I really did not find it necessary to use them. A good screwdriver and an decent hex key is all you need.
Pros:
Delivered to the house
Instructions are easy to follow
Not hard to assemble
Power tools optional
Cons:
Parts could be higher quality
Take a few hours to assemble
The bed need to be perfectly square for the drawers operate property
I would highly recommend this product. I needed a lower bed frame to fit in my (slanted ceiling) room. Its perfect. LOTS of storage underneath, big drawers that easily slide in and out. However, it took about 3 HOURS to set up and I am a small woman. Some parts were really heavy and no matter if you are male or female, you will DEFINITELY need some help setting it up. Use an power drill too, I dont have one and if I did it probably would have taken half the time.
We bought the bed based on Zieglers modification recommendations. We bought the hardware needed ahead of time, while it was being shipped. The guy at the hardware store who was helping me find all the pieces said something on the order of If I had to do all these things, I would just buy a different bed. But it cost less than $15 for the parts and didnt take a whole lot extra time to do, and now the bed is super solid.
You dont need felt tape, just thick strips. The bed boards are the hardest part to get in.... You get half the boards in and then you bump into the frame and they all fall out, that sort of thing. It took (2) of us 3 hours or so to put everything, including mods, together. The instructions can be confusing, but once you get the hang of it, its not a big deal. Make sure you keep all the little pieces together! And be careful if youre going to try to get slats to go under the drawers - I had them cut at the store and they are just enough too small to not work.
Also the drawers are not as big as I expected, so look carefully at the picture to see where the bottom of the drawers are. But they provide a decent amount of extra storage space for sweaters, bed sheets, and things. The bed gets 4 stars because its an okay bed (3 stars) but becomes a great bed with mods (4 stars).
Delivery was per expectations. Assembly was straight-forward. Still trying to decide on the quality of XL twin mattress to buy. But even without the longer mattress, my extra tall daughter is happy with the greater leg room.
